Project Dyesabel: muSEAkahan

Throughout the year, there are numerous opportunities to learn about and celebrate LGBTQ+ culture. The LGBTQ+ community as a whole organizes some of these celebrations while others are organized by groups. And I am really privileged to be invited by PROJECT DYESABEL one of Davao's LGBTQ+ Community events last June 26, 2022, that gives emphasis to the Sama Dilaut Bajao community living in Matina Aplaya, Davao City.

PROJECT DYESABEL was formerly known as Ateneo de Davao University Dyesebel. It was founded in 2018 as a social and civic club. As they continue to serve and support our Bajao brothers and sisters, it has become one of Davao's active non-profit, Bajau- and youth-led organizations that co-creates inclusive environmental programs that have already had an impact on the Badjao community in Matina Aplaya.

Education and Training, Sustainable Livelihood, Research and Innovation, Good Governance, and Culture and Arts are DYESABEL Inc.'s five core advocacy areas. Since 2018, it has undergone three major changes:

  1. At #WorldEnvironmentDay last June 5, 2018, the founder spotted the Bajaus diving into plastic-filled waters, which inspired the campaign's first makeover on #BeatPlasticPollutionDay. "Project Dyesable" intends to provide the kids (Php 10 each) dyes in exchange for them picking up garbage at the sea so that they might be able to do their part to protect our environment. Symbolically, their gesture is similar to that of the Filipino mermaid "Dyesabel" from a well-known Philippine television series.
  2. During the second change, they learned that paying kids to pick up trashes is a band-aid approach to a systemic problem. Dysabel is a Bajau mermaid that took on human form in order to spread awareness about the degradation of our oceans. A storytelling session for children and a discussion with their parents/grandparents were used to enhance our educational initiatives in coastal areas.
  3. For this reason, they chose to co-create the organization as a Bajau and youth-led organization so that our marine indigenous peoples "Sama Dilaut," or Bajaus, as well as the young, could engage and lead efforts to mainstream inclusivity in conservation activities. Last April 2021, DYESABEL Inc. became an SEC-registered company.

The Project Dyesabel held an event called muSEAkahan 2022: FOUR the PEOPLE and the PLANET last June 26 to commemorate their fourth anniversary of founding and to raise money for the community members who have been forced to leave their homes because of coastal road construction while also promoting the core mission of the organization to help the Sama Dilaut Bajao Community.

In support of Bajao community, a zero-waste music concert happened. They wanted this year's celebration to be more engaging and thrilling after two years of online celebration, which is why they invited Davao-based stars to performed in front of real audiences and at the same time an online live streaming event was held.

Local companies were supported and Sama-Bajaus crafts and livelihoods were showcased over an entire day fair at the event. Special performances by Davao local artists takes place at night as part of a socialization.

Here are some of the highlights that I capture during my visit.

For those who couldn't make it to the performance in person, a Facebook Live Stream of the show was also made available. But what really matters is the outpouring of DONATIONS they receive from people who support their advocacy after the event.

Giving your time to a cause that you believe in is something you will never regret doing. Enrich your life and learn about the people and ideas in your neighborhood that will change your view for the rest of your life by participating in this program. You can learn more about yourself and your place in the world by giving back to the people around you.

Finding a cause you care about and donating your time to it is critical for many reasons. A fantastic method to learn about the world is to spend time helping others in your community. With the help of a community and a group of like-minded individuals, you can learn so much about how the world functions. Serving others gives you a sense of purpose that often spills over into other areas of your life.

It's also critical for the well-being of your neighborhood! Many of the services and activities we take for granted in our neighborhoods would not be possible without the dedication of volunteers. Giving back to the less fortunate by volunteering at local shelters or food banks is a worthwhile endeavor. You may help bridge some of the social, economic and political divides in your town by giving back to it.

Giving back to your community is a win-win situation for everyone involved. People who volunteer on a regular basis have been shown to be healthier on both a physical and mental level. Over the course of their lives, those who have volunteered frequently tend to live longer and be in better mental health. Volunteering provides a sense of purpose in addition to the health benefits. Giving back and making a difference in the world has no equal when it comes to the satisfaction you get from doing so.

You may get to know your neighbors and the people who live in your neighborhood better by giving back. Volunteering gives you the chance to meet a wide variety of people. You'll be able to expand your social circle by working with people who share your interest in improving the environment. As a bonus, it will give you a greater understanding of the lives of those in your neighborhood. To be a good citizen, you need to have an open mind and a wide range of experiences to draw from.

Volunteering teaches you more than just people skills. You'll learn patience, kindness, and resilience through helping others. Additionally, you'll be exposed to a wide range of experiences that can aid you in navigating your career path in the future, such as working with a diverse team. It's possible that volunteering will lead to the discovery of a new interest or hobby.

There are a plethora of worthwhile initiatives in need of volunteers' assistance. Volunteering is a great opportunity to give back to the community, no matter what your interests are. In many towns and cities, you'll find community centers where you can find ways to give back to the place where you live. You can also look for volunteer opportunities on the Project Dyesabel Facebook Page. Giving even a few hours of your time each month can have a significant impact on the lives of those around you.

Congratulations to Project Dyesabel! Magsukol!
