A Realistic Take on a Film That Reflects Today’s Philippine Politics by Pal Raine

A Movie Date We Waited for Decades — and One We Almost Lost Hope On

The last time Mama and I watched a movie together, I was in 3rd year high school. Back then, cinemas were completely different—no reclining seats, no surround speakers, with air-conditioned but not so comfort. Just simple theaters with long lines, and the excitement of watching a film on the big screen. Our movie was The Bodyguard, and it became one of those memories that never left me.

Now, I’m already in my late 40s, and Mama is 84. And life nearly kept us from ever sharing another movie moment again.

For almost six months, Mama suffered from cataracts. Her vision became so blurry that she could barely see faces, shapes, and colors clearly. She often stayed home, unable to enjoy the little things she used to love. It was painful for me to watch her struggle, not just physically, but emotionally.

Recently, she underwent eye surgery—a moment we prayed hard for. And when her vision slowly returned, even if not perfect, I saw her become lively again… hopeful again.

So when she said, “Gusto ko sumama manood ng sine,” ( I want to join you to watch a movie).

My heart felt like it was going to burst.

After decades, and after months of not seeing clearly, she joined me at SM Lanang Cinema 4 to watch Zootopia 2. And this movie date became more than just a film experience—it became a celebration of healing, gratitude, and another chance to create memories together.

Zootopia 2: A Film That Hits Close to Home—Especially in Today’s Philippine Political Climate

Zootopia 2 surprised me with how bold, mature, and honest it was. The story goes beyond cute animals and humor—it dives into political manipulation, misinformation, public division, and the uncomfortable realities of how power is used and abused.

Watching it with Mama, who has seen countless political eras in the Philippines, made the movie even more impactful.

We couldn’t help noticing the parallels:

    • Charismatic leaders who promise progress

    • Hidden agendas shaping public opinion

    • Citizens confused about who to believe

    • Systems that sometimes benefit the powerful more than the people

    At one point, Mama whispered,
“Parang Pinas lang talaga ‘yan, JL ( looks like Philippines setting).” 🫢🤭
And I felt a lump in my throat.

    Because she was right.

Zootopia 2 may be animated, but its message is painfully—and brilliantly—real.

Seriously, what makes Zootopia 2 stand out is not just its stunning animation or the return of beloved characters—it’s how boldly it mirrors the realities of society, especially for us Filipinos. The film doesn’t lecture, doesn’t preach, and certainly doesn’t choose sides. Instead, it presents a world where the lines between truth and illusion blur so easily that even the most well-intentioned characters can get lost in it.

This sequel digs deeper into the political tension simmering beneath Zootopia’s vibrant surface. It shows how public opinion can be shaped, how leaders can be celebrated one minute and questioned the next, and how fear can be used to fragment communities. There are moments that feel uncomfortably familiar, almost like watching a stylized version of Philippine politics—where charisma often overshadows credibility, and where the stories people choose to believe depend on who tells them loudest.

What makes it brilliant is that the film uses humor, relatability, and metaphor to show all this without feeling heavy-handed. Kids will see animals navigating challenges. Adults will see a reflection of electoral seasons, online troll farms, shifting narratives, and power struggles disguised as public service.

But here’s the beauty of it—Zootopia 2 never loses hope.

Beneath the political tension lies a quiet reminder that:

    1. integrity still matters, even when it isn’t loud
    2. truth survives, even when buried
    3. unity is fragile, but not impossible
    4. real change begins with ordinary citizens choosing courage over convenience

And yet, the movie stops short of giving easy answers. It doesn’t tell you who’s right, who’s wrong, or how things should be fixed. Instead, it invites you to think, observe, and question—just like Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde do as they navigate a Zootopia that feels more divided and more complicated than before.

    +++

And then comes the surprise character—Gary De’Snake.

Zootopia fans will surely talk about him.

He enters quietly, almost subtly, but his presence shifts the tone of the film. Gary De’Snake is the kind of character who represents the side of politics we don’t openly discuss—but we all know it exists. He is calm yet calculating, charming yet mysterious, and his words carry a weight that can either steady a situation or tip it over.

And no, he’s not your typical villain.
Nor is he your typical savior.

    He’s more… complicated.

Gary De’Snake feels like the embodiment of that one political figure we can’t quite categorize—someone who appears when the city is most vulnerable, someone who speaks with conviction, someone who knows how to sway a room without raising their voice.

He’s the type of character that makes you wonder:
    “What does he really want?”
    And more importantly:
“Why does he feel so familiar?”

His introduction is unexpected. His role is intriguing. And his impact—subtle but powerful—keeps you guessing until the very end.

For the Zootopia fandom, this is the twist you’ll enjoy.
For Filipino viewers, this is the character you will dissect.

Is Gary De’Snake the key to Zootopia’s stability?
Or is he the one quietly shaking its foundation?

The movie won’t hand you the answers.
It will make you think, observe, and stay curious—long after the credits roll.

    One thing is certain:
Zootopia 2 gives you a political puzzle wrapped in humor, wrapped in mystery, wrapped in the kind of storytelling that respects both children and adults.

    It’s a film that entertains…
but also invites you to read between the lines.

Seeing Again, Living Again, and Enjoying a Movie Again

What touched me most was watching Mama enjoy the film with her newly restored vision. The colors, the movement, the characters—she may not see them as sharply as before, but to her, everything felt vivid and alive again.

She held my arm and said,
“Buti nakikita ako ulit.” (Good thing I can see again.)

And that simple sentence made the entire movie worth it.

SM Lanang Cinema 4: A World Away From the Cinemas of Our Youth

Compared to the cinemas of my high school days, SM Lanang Cinema 4 felt like stepping into a new world.

    • Soft seats

    • Cold air conditioning

    • Clear sound

    • A bright, crisp screen

    Mama even laughed and said,
“Uy sosyal na ang sinehan ngayon!” (Wow, cinemas are so fancy now!”)
And I couldn’t help but laugh with her.

It felt like the universe gave us a comfortable, beautiful setting for our long-overdue mother-daughter movie date.

Final Thoughts: Watch It This November 26 and Bring Someone You Love

Zootopia 2 is more than a children’s movie. It’s a mirror to society, a commentary on leadership and truth, and a reminder that we must stay aware and united as citizens.

But for me and Mama, it will forever be the movie that marked her return to clearer vision, to joy, and to sharing memories with me again.

    This film is worth watching—
but watching it with someone dear to you makes it unforgettable.

When it hits theaters this November 26, treat yourself to a moment like this.
You never know how meaningful a simple movie date can become.

Last November 14, Friday, I finally experienced something I had been looking forward to for years — the Abreeza Ayala Mall Christmas Lighting Ceremony 2025, themed “Christmas Magic Unwraps.” And let me tell you, it was more than just a lighting event; it was a celebration of heart, community, and Filipino craftsmanship that truly captured the spirit of Pasko sa Davao.

A Handmade Christmas Tree Crafted with Love

The highlight of the night was, of course, the centerpiece — the Abreeza Christmas Tree. But this isn’t just any mall decoration. This stunning tree was handmade by senior citizens of Bulacan, Malalag, Davao del Sur, making it a symbol of filipino craftsmanship, creativity, and love for the community.

Each ornament and detail reflected hours of dedication, turning a simple tree into a heartwarming masterpiece that reminded everyone that Christmas is truly about giving, sharing, and celebrating togetherness. For me, seeing this first-hand made my first Christmas Lighting experience even more meaningful.

    The Moment the Lights Sparkled

As the countdown began, the crowd — families, friends, and fellow Christmas enthusiasts — held their breath. And then, the lights went on! The entire mall transformed into a shimmering wonderland, with golden lights, festive decorations, and joyful smiles everywhere.

The “Christmas Unwrapped” theme felt perfect: it was like opening a gift of light, music, and warmth, revealing the true magic of the season.

    A Serenade by Daryl Ong

Adding an unforgettable touch to the evening, Daryl Ong serenaded the crowd with his soulful Christmas classics. His voice filled the atrium with warmth, complementing the glowing lights and festive ambiance. Being serenaded while watching the beautiful handmade tree light up the night made the experience feel truly cinematic — the kind of holiday memory you never forget.

    Instagrammable Spots and Holiday Vibes

Abreeza didn’t just stop at lighting the tree. The mall’s Christmas decorations and installations were thoughtfully curated to be:

    • Instagrammable and TikTok-friendly

    • Perfect for family photos and holiday portraits

    • Great for capturing the magic of Pasko sa Davao

But knowing the story behind the tree made every photo even more special — it wasn’t just pretty lights; it was a celebration of local culture and community spirit.

Why You Should Visit Abreeza This Holiday Season

If you’re looking to feel the true essence of Christmas in Davao City, Abreeza Ayala Mall is the place to be. Here’s why:
