On October 17, 2024, I had the privilege of attending GCash’s 20th birthday celebration, held at the chic and vibrant Omerta Restaurant in Davao City. As someone who’s been using GCash for years, it was an exciting moment to be part of such a significant milestone for one of the Philippines' leading financial apps. The event was a perfect blend of fun, innovation, and heartfelt gratitude for the users who have made GCash an essential part of everyday life.

A Glamorous Venue for a Momentous Occasion

Omerta Restaurant, located in the heart of Davao City, was the ideal venue for this special occasion. Known for its elegant ambiance and modern interiors, the restaurant was transformed into a festive space adorned with the signature GCash blue and white colors. The atmosphere was buzzing with excitement as content creators, influencers, and GCash partners gathered to celebrate two decades of success and innovation.

The setup gave the event a cozy yet upscale vibe, with lights strung overhead and tables adorned with sleek décor. It was the perfect setting for an evening of mingling, celebrating, and, of course, capturing those Instagram-worthy moments.

The GCash Story: 20 Years of Innovation

The celebration began with a short program, where Mr. Kim Martin Viray, AVP Head of Marketing Communication from GCash gave an inspiring speech about the company’s journey over the past 20 years. From its humble beginnings as a mobile wallet to becoming a comprehensive financial platform offering services like online payments, loans, and insurance, GCash has truly revolutionized how Filipinos manage their finances.

A Night of Good Food and Great Conversations

Of course, no birthday celebration is complete without delicious food, and Omerta Restaurant did not disappoint. The menu was a delightful mix of local and international cuisine, perfectly paired with refreshing drinks. Guests enjoyed sumptuous dishes while engaging in lively conversations about how GCash has impacted our daily lives. It was interesting to hear different stories—some people raved about how GCash has made online shopping easier, while others appreciated its role in making bill payments and money transfers hassle-free.

As someone who uses GCash regularly for everything from paying bills to online purchases, it was great to hear that others shared the same sentiments. The app has truly become a game-changer for many of us.

Games, Prizes, and a Look to the Future

One of the highlights of the evening was the trivia games and raffles that got everyone involved. There was a palpable sense of excitement as attendees participated in interactive activities, vying for amazing prizes, including GCash credits  and exclusive merchandise. It was clear that GCash wanted to give back to its loyal users and partners who have supported them over the years.

Last night, I had the pleasure of witnessing SM Lanang's enchanting Christmas tree lighting, and it was an experience I won’t soon forget. The magic of Christmas truly came alive on October 18, 2024, as the mall unveiled its grand holiday display, kicking off the season with sparkle and joy.

As I arrived at the SM Lanang Atrium, the excitement in the air was palpable. Families, kids, and content creators were all gathered, eagerly waiting for the big reveal. The entire place was beautifully decorated in the theme colors of champagne and merlot, giving the event a luxurious and festive vibe. The soft beige and rich burgundy tones made the atmosphere feel warm, elegant, and perfectly in tune with the holiday season. It felt like stepping into a winter wonderland, even in the middle of Davao's warm weather.

    The 55-Foot Christmas Tree

The highlight of the night, of course, was the unveiling of SM Lanang's iconic 55-foot Christmas tree. As the lights flickered on, the tree came to life, standing tall and radiant. But what made it truly unique were the added details that made the display enchanting. Moving butterflies fluttered around, small illuminated trees surrounded the main attraction, and reindeers stood proudly, as if ready to pull Santa’s sleigh.

Speaking of sleighs, the giant red sleigh beside the tree added that perfect touch of Christmas magic. Nearby, a mystical well completed the scene, evoking a sense of wonder and whimsy that made both kids and adults gaze in awe.

    A Festive Atmosphere

As the evening went on, the atmosphere became even more festive. Christmas music played in the background, adding to the excitement. You could see families taking photos, capturing memories, and simply enjoying the moment. It was heartwarming to see everyone in shades of champagne and merlot, embracing the elegant spirit of Christmas.

What stood out for me was how the whole event felt so communal and joyful. Dabawenyos came together to celebrate, and I could feel the warmth and excitement shared by everyone present. It’s always special when a city comes alive for the holidays, and SM Lanang has certainly set the bar high this year.

    What’s Next?

This is just the beginning of the Christmas celebrations, and I can’t wait to see what other tree lighting ceremonies will bring. SM Lanang has definitely set the festive tone, and I’m looking forward to experiencing more magical moments this holiday season.

For those who haven’t been yet, I highly recommend taking the time to visit SM Lanang and immerse yourself in this enchanting Christmas wonderland. The lights, the decorations, and the entire atmosphere are sure to fill you with holiday cheer.

The Christmas Lighting event at SM Lanang was nothing short of magical. From the grand 55-foot tree to the mystical well and reindeer, every detail evoked a sense of wonder. It was a night filled with joy, laughter, and festive spirit, reminding us all why we love this time of year. I left the event feeling inspired and excited for the holidays to come.

Here’s to more Christmas magic, more lights, and more moments that make the holiday season so special. 🎄✨

Dealing with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is something I’ve had to navigate for a while now. If you’ve experienced that burning sensation in your chest or the constant discomfort that comes with acid reflux, you know how disruptive it can be to your daily life. Over time, I’ve discovered that food can either be my worst enemy or my greatest ally. Through trial and error, I’ve found ways to manage my symptoms, and in this post, I want to share what has worked for me and how healthy eating has transformed my life.

    The Struggle with GERD

When I first started noticing the symptoms of GERD, I was confused and frustrated. I loved eating a variety of foods, and suddenly, even my favorite meals were causing me pain. I couldn’t enjoy my morning coffee, and late-night snacks became a thing of the past. The constant discomfort pushed me to make a change. But change didn’t come easy.

At first, I made all the common mistakes—skipping meals, eating late at night, and indulging in foods that were major triggers. These habits only worsened the situation, and my energy levels started to drop. It became clear that if I wanted to take control of my health, I had to start with my diet.

The Discovery: Oatmeal, Bananas and Sweet Potato

The first food that became a lifesaver was oatmeal. I can’t even count how many mornings I’ve started with a warm bowl of oatmeal. It’s not only soothing for my stomach, but it also keeps me full and satisfied for hours. I usually top it with bananas or sweet potatoes, another gentle food that has helped me cope. Bananas are non-acidic and packed with nutrients, and they quickly became my go-to snack.

Yes, sweet potatoes are a great option for individuals with GERD due to their non-acidic nature. They're rich in essential nutrients like fiber, vitamins A and C, potassium, and antioxidants. The fiber in sweet potatoes aids digestion, while their low acidity can help reduce GERD symptoms by avoiding stomach irritation. Including sweet potatoes in your diet is a healthy and gentle way to manage GERD while still enjoying a nutrient-packed food.

Learning to Love MORE about eating Vegetables

Vegetables used to be an afterthought, but now they are at the heart of every meal. Steamed okra, eggplant and malunggay are rich in vitamins, and the fact that they are easy to digest makes them perfect for someone like me, who has to be careful about acid reflux. One of my favorite dinners is a simple, steamed veggie bowl with a bit of grilled chicken—light, nutritious, and completely GERD-friendly.

And yes, I included eggplant in my list, it is considered a vegetable, though botanically, it is actually a fruit because it develops from the flowering part of the plant and contains seeds. It is commonly used as a vegetable in cooking due to its savory flavor and versatility. Eggplant is rich in fiber, vitamins, and antioxidants, making it a nutritious addition to many dishes.

Lean Protein: Chicken Saved the Day

When I first started cutting out fatty foods, I was worried I’d lose flavor in my meals. But that was far from the truth. Lean chicken breast quickly became a staple in my diet, offering me the protein I needed without the greasy aftermath that other meats left behind. I’ve since learned how to make chicken interesting—grilled, baked, or tossed into a fresh salad.

The Tough Goodbye: Citrus, Softdrinks and Coffee

Letting go of citrus, soft drinks, and coffee has been one of the toughest parts of managing my GERD. I’ve always enjoyed the bright burst of flavor from oranges and lemons, the fizzy rush of soft drinks, and that comforting first sip of coffee in the morning. These were my daily treats, little joys I relied on to keep me going through the day.

But as my GERD symptoms worsened, I had to make the hard decision to say goodbye. The acidity from citrus, the carbonation from sodas, and the caffeine in coffee became triggers I could no longer ignore. It wasn't easy—especially when I’d see friends enjoying a cold soda on a hot day or smelling the freshly brewed coffee in the morning.

The journey hasn't been without its struggles, but I've learned to adjust. I've found alternatives that are kinder to my stomach and keep me feeling balanced—like apple slices became my sweet fix, while a soothing cup of herbal teas, alkaline fruits, and even the occasional decaf coffee. It’s been a tough goodbye, but choosing my health over temporary indulgence has made a real difference in how I feel every day.

    The Importance of Hydration

One of the most underrated aspects of managing GERD has been staying hydrated. I used to drink anything carbonated without thinking twice, but that only made things worse. Now, warm water with guava leaves is my best friend. It keeps my system in balance and helps reduce the acid buildup that used to leave me feeling miserable.

All you have to do is boil 15 guava leaves for 15 minutes and drink the water in the morning before breakfast. It’s a simple routine, but guava leaf tea is packed with benefits, especially for digestive health. Known for its anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties, this tea can help soothe the stomach and may alleviate symptoms of GERD and other digestive issues. You can also make it your everyday drink, as it’s a natural remedy that supports overall wellness without the acidity or irritation that comes with other beverages like coffee, juice or soda.

How Healthy Eating Gave Me Control

What I’ve learned from living with GERD is that food is incredibly powerful. By embracing a healthy diet full of whole grains, lean proteins, and low-acid fruits and vegetables, I’ve managed to significantly reduce my symptoms. But more than that, I feel more energized and in tune with my body. The constant discomfort that once ruled my life is now something I manage, not something that manages me.

This journey hasn’t been perfect. There have been setbacks and days when I missed my old eating habits. But the benefits far outweigh the challenges. I feel stronger, healthier, and more connected to the choices I make each day. GERD is no longer an obstacle—it’s a reminder to take care of myself and to continue discovering the foods that make me feel my best.

If you’re going through the same struggles, know that change is possible. It may take time, but with the right approach to eating, you can reclaim your comfort and well-being. Trust me, I’ve been there.

September 21, 1972, became a defining moment in Philippine history—the day when President Ferdinand Marcos officially declared martial law, marking the start of a dictatorship that would last for years. Although I wasn’t born at that time, the impact of martial law stretched far beyond its initial declaration, shaping the future of the country and leaving a lasting legacy that affected many generations, including mine.

Martial law officially ended on January 17, 1981, with Proclamation 2045, but the end of the declaration didn’t mean the end of Marcos’ rule. In fact, he maintained his dictatorial grip on the country until the People Power Revolution in February 1986, which finally forced him out of power. As a child in my primary years, I have vivid memories of those times.

    Davao City Under Martial Law

During the martial law years, Davao City was not the city we know today. It was far from being a livable or safe place. The city was riddled with violence, unrest, and uncertainty. Growing up during those years, I saw how life was affected by the political climate. The city I called home was struggling under the weight of the dictatorship, much like the rest of the country.

In my primary years, it’s still vivid to me—the chaos between groups like the Alsa Masa, the Philippine National Police (PNP), and other factions that were trying to gain control of the city. Studying at Assumption School of Davao during that time, I remember the fear and tension that loomed over us, with violence often spilling into the streets. The daily unrest left an impression on all of us, shaping our experience of what life was like during the martial law era in Davao City.

I vividly remember going out and attending rallies with my classmates, joining the crowds as we chanted, "Makibaka, Huwag Matakot," "Ipaglaban ang mga Karapatan," and "Sobra na, Tama na." These powerful slogans were etched in my memory, symbolizing the people's struggle for freedom and justice. Even at that young age, I could sense that our country was not in good hands.

I witnessed the unrest firsthand—people rioting, clashing in the streets, and fighting for their rights. The images of violence and chaos have stayed with me to this day. I saw killings, blood on the roads, and ambushes that left a deep mark on my mind, shaping my understanding of that dark chapter in our history. Those experiences still resonate with me, reminding me of the difficult times we endured during martial law.

The Transformation: Thanks to Rodrigo Duterte

Then came Rodrigo Duterte, a man who would eventually reshape Davao City and its future. Through his leadership, the city underwent a transformation like no other. Duterte’s tough policies, particularly on crime and safety, turned Davao into one of the safest cities in the Philippines. Under his governance, the people of Davao could finally feel secure and proud of their home.

I grew up knowing Davao as the safest city in the country, a city where law and order were enforced, and its people could walk the streets without fear. This transformation became a symbol of hope, not just for Davaoeños but for the entire nation.

The Present: Davao in the Spotlight

In recent times, Davao City has found itself in the national spotlight, though not always in a positive way. The city that was once known for its discipline and order is now facing challenges that threaten the progress it made under Duterte's leadership. It’s disheartening to see these developments, as I know what the city is capable of.

    Hope for Davao’s Future

As we reflect on the dark days of martial law and the incredible transformation that Davao City went through, I can only hope and pray that the city returns to the level of peace, safety, and progress it once achieved under the leadership of Tatay Digong. Davao City is still a place with enormous potential, and I believe that with the right leadership and direction, it can once again shine as a beacon of hope and safety for the rest of the Philippines.

Hope for My Country, the Philippines

Despite the struggles we have faced as a nation, I hold on to hope for my beloved Philippines. The dark days of martial law may have left a lasting impact on our collective memory, but they also strengthened our resilience. I believe in our potential to rise above adversity, to heal, and to move forward as a united people. As we continue to rebuild and progress, my hope is that we can foster a deeper sense of unity, justice, and peace. The transformation that cities like Davao have undergone is a testament to what can be achieved when we work together. With strong leadership, compassion, and a shared vision for the future, I believe the Philippines will continue to grow and thrive.

Let’s never forget the lessons of the past, and let’s continue to strive for a better future for our beloved city and country!
