Last August 12, I had the chance to be part of the 2nd SM Fun Day for Davao Social Media and Content Creators at SM Bowling, SM Lanang—and let me tell you, it was a day filled with laughter, fun, and a little bit of friendly competition!

As content creators, most of us are used to being behind our screens, crafting stories, editing videos, or capturing the best angles for our posts. But this time, SM gave us the opportunity to disconnect from the online world (well, just a little!) and enjoy a day of games, bonding, and teamwork.

    The Games We Played 🎳🎱🏓🎤🏹

The day kicked off with a series of games that tested not only our skills but also our teamwork and sportsmanship.

Bowling: Nothing beats the thrill of hearing those pins crash down. It’s always exciting, especially when your team cheers you on even if you only manage to hit a few pins!

Billiards: Precision and focus were key here. Some of us hadn’t played in years, but the spirit of fun made every shot memorable.

Table Tennis: This one had us running, swinging, and laughing all at once. Quick reflexes were definitely needed!

Guess the Song via Karaoke: Probably one of the most hilarious parts of the day. Who knew that guessing songs while trying not to burst into laughter could be so challenging?

Archery: A game that tested our aim and patience. It wasn’t easy, but hitting the target felt so rewarding!

Meet the JUMBO HOTDOG TEAM 🌭

    Video by Davao Food Guide

And of course, the highlight for me was being part of the JUMBO HOTDOG TEAM. Yes, that was our team name, and just like the name itself, we were all about having big fun!

We gave it our best shot in every game, cheering for one another, and just enjoying the whole experience. By the end of the competition, we proudly landed 3rd place—and that was already a huge win for us considering the talent and energy of all the other teams.

    Why This Day Mattered

Thanks SM City Davao & SM Lanang

More than just the games and prizes, what really made this event special was the bond it created among Davao’s social media and content creators. It was nice to meet familiar faces, reconnect with friends, and even get to know new ones in a setting outside of the usual events and collaborations.

    Thanks Davao Famous Restaurant

The 2nd SM Fun Day reminded me that being a content creator isn’t just about work and deadlines—it’s also about building a community where we can support each other, share good vibes, and create lasting memories.

✨ Thank you, SM Lanang, for hosting such a fun-filled event. The JUMBO HOTDOG TEAM will always remember this day with smiles, laughter, and a 3rd place finish! Until the next SM Fun Day—game on!

When people hear the word sustainability, they often think of solar panels, electric tricycles, and bamboo straws. But here in Brgy. 76-A Bucana, sustainability is taking a quieter, more unexpected form — and it’s happening right on our screens.

Since the recent barangay elections, I’ve noticed something different. Our barangay captain, instead of relying solely on the usual posters, flyers, or even just word of mouth, has been personally posting updates and announcements on his own online platform. In a community where information sometimes gets lost in the shuffle of multiple group chats, barangay pages, and neighborhood grapevines, this direct line from leader to resident feels refreshing — and, in many ways, revolutionary.

A Digital Captain at the Helm

Bucana, officially known as Barangay 76-A, is recognized as the largest barangay in District 1, Davao City, both in terms of land area and population. Strategically located along the coastline, it serves as a vital residential and commercial hub that contributes significantly to the city’s growth. With its dense population and diverse communities, Bucana faces unique challenges in urban planning, social services, and infrastructure development, making it one of the most dynamic and closely monitored barangays in the city.

Bucana is a lively barangay. We have fishermen mending their nets by the shore, kids playing basketball in the afternoons, tricycles zipping by, and families gathering for evening conversations outside their homes. But like many communities, we also face challenges — from weather disruptions to public health concerns, to keeping everyone informed about projects and programs.

This is where our captain’s digital shift comes in. His posts aren’t flashy or filled with gimmicks — they’re clear, timely, and consistent. Whether it’s a schedule for clean-up drives, reminders about vaccination days, or updates on relief distribution, the message comes straight from him.

The power of this is twofold:

    1. Clarity — No more “I heard it from someone who heard it from someone else.”

    2. Accountability — When your leader is the one hitting post, you know the message is official.

The Noise of Too Many Channels

Before this shift, Brgy. 76-A Bucana already had plenty of Facebook groups and community chats. The problem? Too many sources can mean too much confusion. Announcements would sometimes be posted late, missed entirely, or drowned in the flood of other unrelated content — from marketplace listings to birthday greetings.

I remember once missing a barangay clean-up drive simply because the announcement was posted in a group chat I had muted months ago. Multiply that by hundreds of residents, and you see how easy it is for participation to drop, not because people don’t care, but because they simply don’t know.

Now, with the barangay captain leading his own digital channel, I find myself checking updates more often. It’s like having a community bulletin board right in my pocket — one I can trust to be accurate.

    Digital Connection as Sustainability

You might be wondering — what does this have to do with sustainability?

Here in Bucana, one of our daily challenges is dealing with road closures caused by ongoing, unfinished construction. It’s not just an inconvenience—it affects how quickly people can get to work, bring kids to school, or even access emergency services. At the same time, our community continues to address social concerns like illegal drugs, which require consistent awareness and cooperation among residents.

Sustainability in our barangay doesn’t just mean caring for the environment—it’s also about building systems that keep us informed, connected, and engaged. Through digital communication, residents can receive timely updates on road works, traffic rerouting, and community programs. It’s faster, reduces paper waste, and allows more people to participate in important discussions without being physically present at the barangay hall.

By using technology to strengthen coordination, we can respond more efficiently to challenges—whether it’s navigating a blocked road or mobilizing support for anti-drug initiatives. This way, we work towards a community that’s not only cleaner and greener, but also safer, more informed, and united.

    One Barangay at a Time

The beauty of the Digitally Forward vision is that it doesn’t require an overnight transformation. It’s about steady progress. One barangay at a time. One update at a time. One habit at a time.

Brgy. 76-A Bucana’s shift might look small from the outside — just a captain posting on Facebook or another platform — but in reality, it’s laying the foundation for bigger things:

    1. More informed citizens — because everyone has equal access to updates.

    2. Higher participation rates — because people are more aware of what’s happening.

    3. Stronger trust — because the barangay leadership is visible and reachable.

I’ll be honest — I’m not particularly close to our barangay officials. I’m one of those residents who quietly goes about their day, pays attention to local matters from a distance, and only engages directly when necessary.

But lately, I’ve caught myself reacting to posts, commenting on updates, even sharing them. It’s a subtle reminder that leadership doesn’t always have to be about speeches, big projects, or ceremonial events. Sometimes, it’s about the simple act of showing up — digitally, yes, but consistently.

The fact that our captain is more active online tells me that he sees value in meeting the community where we are — and for many of us, that’s on our phones, during a break at work, after dinner, or while waiting for the rain to stop.

Of course, no system is perfect. Digital communication still faces hurdles:

    * Not everyone in Bucana has stable internet access.

    * Some residents may still prefer in-person announcements.

    * Online platforms can be prone to misinformation if not managed carefully.

But these are challenges worth tackling. Imagine if every barangay in Davao City — or even across the country — had leaders using digital tools not just for political campaigns, but for everyday governance. The potential for collaboration, information-sharing, and rapid response is huge.

Brgy. 76-A Bucana’s digital shift is part of a larger trend: communities embracing technology to strengthen local governance. It’s about using tools we already have — smartphones, social media, instant messaging — and applying them with purpose.

In the future, I’d love to see this effort grow into:

    * A central barangay app with announcements, event calendars, and emergency alerts.

    * Digital feedback forms so residents can easily voice concerns or suggestions.

    * Online archives of projects and initiatives for transparency.

These ideas may sound ambitious, but if there’s one thing I’ve learned from our captain’s posts, it’s that change doesn’t always start with big leaps. Sometimes, it starts with one post, one update, one decision to show up.

    Moving Digitally Forward

Brgy. 76-A Bucana is still the same vibrant community I’ve always known. The sunsets over the shoreline are still breathtaking, the hum of tricycles still fills the air, and the laughter of children still spills into the streets. But there’s a quiet shift happening — a move towards being #DigitallyForward.

And while it might not make headlines, it’s making a difference in how we connect, respond, and work together.

If you ask me, sustainability starts with communication. And right now, our barangay is proving that one clear voice, one active platform, and one engaged leader can help build a stronger, more sustainable future — one barangay at a time.

If there’s one scent that instantly says “You’re in Davao”, it’s the sweet, creamy, and slightly daring aroma of durian. This week, that unmistakable fragrance greeted me the moment I stepped into SM Lanang — because the Durian Festival is officially back for its 11th year!

I’ve been to past Durian Festivals before, but this one feels extra special. After all, it’s not just a mall event — it’s a full-blown celebration brought to life by a powerhouse partnership: the Department of Agriculture, Durian Industry Association of Davao City, Durian Exporters Association of the Philippines, Department of Tourism, and the City Government of Davao. When you have that many hands working together, you know it’s going to be something worth sinking your teeth into.

    A Feast for the Senses

The moment I arrived, I was met with rows of durian stalls, each proudly displaying the king of fruits in all its spiky glory. The vendors weren’t just selling — they were sharing stories: where their durians came from, how this year’s harvest has been, and even tips on how to pick the perfect one.

And oh, the varieties! Puyat, Duyaya, Arancillo, Kob White, and more — each with its own personality. If you’ve only ever had one type of durian, this festival will make you realize just how diverse (and delicious) the fruit can be.

    A Kadayawan Must-Experience

August in Davao is more than just another month — it’s Kadayawan Festival, a season of gratitude, celebration, and showcasing the bounty of the land. The Durian Festival is one of the sweetest ways to experience that spirit, quite literally.

While durian is undeniably the star of the show, the festival also offers plenty for those who aren’t into the King of Fruits. You can indulge in marang, rambutan, mangosteen, pomelo, avocado, banana, santol, lanzones, and more — each a proud product of Davao’s fertile soil and hardworking farmers.

You’ll also find durian candies and other fruity treats to enjoy. Plus, there are fruit and plant seeds for sale, along with refreshing fermented and herbal juices made from local plants and fruits.

It’s like a fruit basket come to life, with every stall telling a story of abundance.

    More Than Just Eating

What I love about the Durian Festival is that it’s not just about indulging. It’s also about understanding the fruit’s journey from farm to fork — and the hardworking farmers, traders, and exporters who make it possible.

The Department of Agriculture plays a big role in supporting durian growers, ensuring quality standards and helping farmers maximize their yield.

The Durian Industry Association of Davao City and the Durian Exporters Association of the Philippines ensure that our beloved fruit doesn’t just stay local — it travels to markets abroad, carrying with it the pride of Davao.

The Department of Tourism adds that extra push to make durian not just a food, but an experience.

And of course, the City Government of Davao represented by the OIC, City Agriculturist ties it all together, making sure the festival remains a highlight in our cultural calendar.

Durian from Davao City is no longer just a local treasure — it has gone global. Through the combined efforts of farmers, industry associations, and government support, our prized fruit is now exported internationally, reaching markets in countries such as China, Japan, and Singapore.

This achievement is a source of pride for the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), which continues to strengthen trade partnerships and open new opportunities for Davao’s durian in the global market. Not only does this boost our local economy, but it also cements Davao’s reputation as the Durian Capital of the Philippines, making every bite a taste of homegrown excellence recognized around the world.

    Why It Matters

Living in Davao, it’s easy to take durian for granted. But festivals like this remind me that our fruit is more than just a local delicacy — it’s an industry, a livelihood, and a cultural symbol. It’s something that brings farmers, exporters, chefs, tourists, and everyday residents together in one shared love (or at least shared curiosity) for this unique fruit.

And during this month, Kadayawan, it’s the perfect reminder that Davao’s bounty isn’t just delicious — it’s worth celebrating, sharing, and sustaining for generations to come. Visiting tourists, whether first-timers or returning guests, are always fond of coming back to join the festivities and take pride in celebrating with the Dabawenyos — just like our friends from the People’s Republic of China, who continue to visit Davao year after year.

    Looking Ahead

The Durian Festival at SM Lanang isn’t just an event — it’s a reminder that Davao’s agricultural heritage is alive and thriving. It’s proof of what can happen when government agencies, industry associations, and private sectors work hand in hand.

As I left the festival, hands sticky from my last rambutan and lanzones (note to self: bring more wet wipes next time), I couldn’t help but feel proud. Proud to be from a city that celebrates its roots, its flavors, and its people. And if you plan to visit and indulge in the durian at the Durian Festival in SM Lanang, trust me—bring plenty of wet wipes! 🤭😆

The festival runs from August 12 until September 14, 2025, giving locals and tourists plenty of time to savor Davao’s bounty. Whether you’re here for the King of Fruits or the many other homegrown harvests, it’s the perfect reason to join the Kadayawan celebration and take home a taste of Davao.

If you haven’t visited yet, do yourself a favor: drop by SM Lanang, grab a seat, explore the stalls, and taste the very essence of Kadayawan. Whether it’s durian or any of Davao’s other homegrown fruits, it’s a bite of tradition you won’t forget.

Let’s face it—TikTok has become the new mall. From skincare finds to kitchen gadgets, I’ve been guilty of adding-to-cart more times than I can count. And recently, I caved in and bought one of the most viral travel items on the app: the 24-inch Travel Luggage by Globe Trotter in a beautiful gray blue shade. I haven’t taken it on a trip yet, but I couldn’t wait to share my thoughts and first impressions!

    Aesthetic Meets Function

The first thing that caught my attention was the gray blue color—subtle, classy, and definitely eye-catching. It's a perfect blend of style and function. I love how it instantly gives off that minimalist, modern traveler vibe. A head-turner without screaming for attention.

But beyond the looks? The features are impressive, too!

    Spacious Interior

Although I haven’t packed it for a trip yet, opening it up showed me just how spacious it really is. It has:

    * A zipped divider on one side to secure clothes and essentials

    * An elastic cross-strap on the other to hold bulkier items

    * A deep main compartment that can easily fit 4-5 days’ worth of travel stuff

It definitely looks like it can handle my usual weekend or short holiday trips without any issue.

    Tech-Savvy Features

This luggage isn’t just about looks—it’s also tech-ready! One standout feature is the built-in USB power bank slot (inside the luggage), allowing you to charge your devices on the go. Just slide your power bank in and connect your cable—convenient and very handy for long queues or airport layovers.

Cup Holder + Bag Strap = Traveler Goals

Two more features I didn’t expect (but totally love):

    * A dedicated tumbler/cup holder, perfect for coffee lovers or those who always bring a reusable water bottle

    * A bag handle hook at the front where you can securely place your handbag, tote, or backpack while rolling the luggage. Super helpful when you’re juggling items or going hands-free

    Smooth Mobility

Though I’ve only tested it around the house, the 360-degree spinner wheels roll like a dream. Combined with its telescopic handle, it feels easy to maneuver—even in tight spaces.

    TikTok-Worthy Value

For something this stylish and functional, the price from TikTok Shop was very reasonable. It arrived fast and well-packaged. I’d say it's definitely a great value for money.

Even before taking it on an actual trip, I’m already loving this luggage. From the sleek design to the smart features like the USB charger and cup holder, it’s thoughtfully made for modern travelers like me.

If you're looking for your next travel companion—or you just love beautiful and useful things like I do—this 24-inch gray blue luggage from TikTok is worth checking out.

A Movie That Asks “Why?” Right from the Start

I walked into SUNSHINE at SM Lanang Cinema curious—and admittedly, a bit puzzled. Why does the director introduce a metaphorical character so early? What was the point of those deliberate silences? Those pauses and metaphors weren’t lazy storytelling—they were hooks. They pulled me in, made me wonder, and made me feel like I was solving a personal puzzle.

Maris & Toinette: A Dazzling Duo

Maris Racal is simply spellbinding here. Her performance hits all the emotional high notes and then some: raw, vulnerable, and achingly real.

Antoinette Jadaone, the wizard behind the lens, flips the script on conventional storytelling—prioritizing silence, space, and symbolism over obvious dialogue. The result? A movie that speaks in subtleties, and lingers in your heart.

    International Accolades (And They’re Well-Deserved)

No wonder the world is raving about SUNSHINE. The film won the Crystal Bear for Best Film at the prestigious 75th Berlin International Film Festival (Berlinale), competing in the Generation 14plus category.

The award highlights a story rooted in sisterhood, resilience, and youth-driven social awareness— themes that resonate globally. The sold-out premiere and memorable Q&A with Maris and Direk Tonette proved one thing: Filipino films can stand shoulder to shoulder with the best of the world.

Sunshine didn’t just shine — it soared!
Not only did it win the Crystal Bear for Best Film at the prestigious 75th Berlin International Film Festival (Berlinale) 2025, but it also brought home two major awards from the Austin Asian American Film Festival 2025: the Narrative Feature Jury Award and the Audience Award.

A double win that proves Sunshine truly radiates across cultures and hearts.

A Film That Makes You Sit & Feel

After the credits rolled, I simply sat there—with a tissue in hand and emotions swirling. There was no rush to speak because everything inside me was already echoing the story. That, dear readers, is SUNSHINE’s magic.

    🌟 Palraine.com Reviewer’s Rating

    My Final Verdict:

SUNSHINE is not just a movie—it’s a feeling. It invites you to lean in, to decode its heartfelt silences, and to feel seen. Come with an open heart, and leave with a piece of sunshine that stays with you.

Don’t miss it, Davao! Watch SUNSHINE now at SM Lanang & SM City Davao— and let me know what part stayed with you.
