It's the first time I've been invited to an art exhibition, and the majority of the artists are from the University of Mindanao (UM Davao), which is one of the most prestigious institution for Fine Arts and Design in Davao City.

KITA ART EXHIBIT was held at La Herencia Davao Art and Events Pavilion last August 26 to September 17, 2022, showcasing the works of art created by UM Fine Arts students and alums. The exhibition is a collaborative effort between PALIKATA and UMBRA Art Society, as well as the UM Fine Arts Department and its students, alumni, and other artists from Davao.

Activities like a LIVE SKETCHING and BUST SCULPTURE instructed by Jesse Namz and Emmanuel Marx, an ALLA PRIMA LECTURE with guest speakers, Mr. Venerando Rey Bollozos and Dominic Pilapil, and an ART TALK together with Rogelito Jun Cayas and Venerando Rey Bollozos are all part of the event's coordination.

The concept was named Kita Art Exhibit, and the exhibition was also named Kita, since the term signifies "we" in both countries. Or a Kita, which in Bisaya means "wealth or profit." Or Kita, as in the Filipino phrase "NAKIKITA KITA," which translates to "I HAVE SEEN YOU." It is up to the individual to determine how to interpret it.

The alumni relations committee came up with the idea for this art show as a way to bring together the college's artist alumni, the students, and other local artists to show how their passion and skills in learning the basics of Fine Arts and Design come out in their work after a long hiatus because of pandemic.

As for PALIKATA's main objective, they want to showcase features artists from UM Fine Arts and across their vast network so they can foster that feeling of community and inspire graduates to continue their involvement with their art and design passion.

It made perfect sense to accomplish it through an exhibit given that the college is still in the process of transitioning back to in-person instruction. In addition to that, it turned out to be an excellent venue for displaying artwork created by students and alumni.

I really like how it creates a new way for students and alumni to interact with one another, and I hope that in the future they will be able to host the gallery displays online as well, so that people who are unable to attend the event in person can still have the opportunity to view them. This means that there will be a greater potential for profit. The fact that it is available online will not adversely affect the response from the general population because the level of participation on social media is extremely high on the algorithm and reaches a greater number of profiles and pages.

As with any event, getting any participation from students and alumni artists is the key thing on the list, but I'm so amazed to know that there are 58 artists who enthusiastically submitted multiple pieces of their art.

I'd be ecstatic if this became an annual event. I'd like to add a reception to promote the art and get in touch, both in person and online, with alumni and other local artists.

SM Prime Holdings, Inc. (SMPHI) just recently made the announcement that it will be supporting the global hunt for women who are leaders in disaster resilience.

SMPHI continues to support the Women's International Network on Disaster Risk Reduction (WIN DRR) Leadership Awards, a flagship program of the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR). This is the second year in a row that SMPHI is sponsoring the awards.

Liza B. Silerio, vice president for corporate compliance at SMPHI, stated that the support aligns with the organization's efforts to acknowledge women's leadership in disaster risk reduction. "This is very important for getting other women to act fully and effectively toward gender equality and women's empowerment, and for building our strength as a group."

Mami Mizutori, the UN Secretary-Special General's Representative for Disaster Risk Reduction, expressed gratitude for the support, stating, "The awards highlight the key role of women as leaders and agents of change in building resilience and actively participating in the creation and implementation of DRR strategies, policies, plans, and programs in their regions. Their experiences illustrate the multiplicity of solutions necessary to address the converging challenges of accelerated climate change and natural disasters in the region."

"We look forward to continuing our DRR relationship with SM," Secretary General Mizutori remarked.

After receiving 420 nominations from a total of 24 countries in the Asia-Pacific region, the WIN DRR Excellence Awards 2022, which are sponsored by SM Prime, have narrowed their field down to 15 finalists. The name of the victor will be revealed at the Asia-Pacific Ministerial Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction, which will take place in Brisbane on September 21, 2022. A one-time prize of $10,000 USD will be given to a deserving female professional who has made outstanding contributions to disaster risk reduction.

The SM Prime Holdings social commitment toward the empowerment, resiliency, good health, and well-being of women is aligned with the WIN DRR relationship in a way that is compatible with this commitment. Corporate social responsibility is the job of SM Cares, a part of the company that gives money to programs that help these causes.

The Women's International Network on Disaster Risk Reduction, often known as WIN DRR, is a professional network that aims to support women who are working in the field of disaster risk reduction in all of its diverse forms. Its overarching objective is to improve the ability of women in Asia and the Pacific to assume leadership roles and to strengthen their voice in the region's disaster risk reduction decision-making. SM Prime and Asia Pacific College are the organizations that provide the power behind the WIN DRR Philippine Network.

SM Prime, under its SM CARES initiative, teamed with UNDRR earlier this year to celebrate women's empowerment through a webinar on the role of women in disaster resilience. Mizutori underlined in her keynote address that "women's equal involvement and leadership in public life, including disaster risk reduction, is necessary and essential to fulfill the United Nations' sustainable development goals."

Smallholder farmers continue to get help from the Jollibee Group Foundation (JGF), which gives them access to more environmentally friendly farming practices that are made possible by technologically sophisticated farming methods.

According to Gisela Tiongson, the Executive Director of the JGF, "Improving the knowledge and capacity of smallholder farmers for increased production and profit would redound to the sustained expansion of our agricultural sector."

The JGF's Farmers Entrepreneurship Program (FEP), which began in 2008, is designed to help smallholder farmers improve their technical and business acumen, as well as their ability to form partnerships. This program also aims to empower these farmers. These farmers now provide the necessary vegetables for restaurants such as Jollibee, Chowking, Greenwich, and Mang Inasal, which are among the most popular in the Philippines.

Since 2019, the PUM Netherlands Senior Experts have guided farmers in soil testing and given them advice on soil health. They have also been assisting in varietal trials to test for better crop varieties, and introduce mechanization to improve productivity.

"Small producers get assured of a regular market, resulting in their increased and stable income," Tiongson explained further, adding that "by becoming more competent and qualified to engage directly in the value chains of food corporations, small producers gain this assurance." JGF has implemented public-private partnerships in an effort to bolster its support for smallholder farmers. These partnerships are designed to assist farmers in gaining access to agricultural technologies that will increase their yield, lower the costs of farming, and make them more competitive in the market.

    Weather data, farmer efficiency

Since 2020, the Foundation has collaborated with IBM's The Weather Company to provide more accurate 7-day weather forecasts for communities. JGF also collaborated with the Central Luzon State University to decipher the weather data and transform it into the daily recommended agricultural practice. The information is then disseminated among farmers more quickly via a private messaging group. This system's SMS functionality is currently being enhanced for improved accessibility.

Together with local and international experts, Jollibee Group Foundation has been introducing technologically advanced farming techniques and systems to smallholder farmers to empower them to improve their productivity and gain more income.

Farmers from Barangay Tabulac in San Jose City, Nueva Ecija, who are members of the Onion and Vegetable Producers Cooperative (OVEPCO), were among the first to receive benefits from this system. The farmers are able to adjust and make more informed decisions about when to plant, fertilize, and harvest their crops with the help of the barangay-level forecasts that are provided.

"This has been useful. Now, we can prepare for tomorrow's events. It has become a roadmap for our everyday farming," stated OVEPCO Chairman Eddie Soriano.

At the moment, 116 farmers in 12 barangays located in San Jose City, Nueva Ecija, and Alcala, Pangasinan are receiving assistance from this project.

    Healthy soil, healthy production

JGF embarked on this project in collaboration with the Bureau of Soils and Water Management of the Department of Agriculture, with the goal of analyzing soil samples and delivering actionable recommendations to improve the soil's overall health and viability in order to increase crop yields.

JGF collaborated with the PUM Netherlands Senior Experts, a number of seed companies, and Jollibee Group's very own Research and Development team in order to find appropriate onion and bell pepper varieties that will meet the requirements of the company and which can be more easily produced by the farmers. This was done in an effort to assist the farmers in improving the quality of their crops.

JGF is also collaborating with the Southeast Asian Regional Center for Graduate Study and Research in Agriculture to increase the production of onion fields. The project, titled "Project SAYA" or Strengthening Agricultural Yield of Allium Cepa L. (Onion) in the Philippines, intends to boost onion production by resolving inefficiencies, gaps, and variables impacting the amount of output; and by identifying prospective and suitable growth sites.

"These initiatives in agri-technology are generating a ripple effect of empowerment and opportunity among our partner farming communities and institutions. They have expressed a higher understanding of farming techniques, an improvement in productivity and income, and the confidence to conduct business with market participants, said Tiongson. "JGF will continue these initiatives so that farmer entrepreneurs can continue to take pride in their vocation and appreciate the benefits of sustainable agriculture."

I was invited to attend the CONTINUUM art exhibit hosted by Art Lounge Manila at Galerie Raphael-Davao, Azuela Cove. I chose to visit this exhibit since I enjoy arts and crafts. I felt exactly like a child at a candy store. It's something I want to explore while I'm still in primary school, and I thought it would be cool to view paintings in a different form or perspective.

When I entered the exhibit for the first time, I was greeted by a large sign that read "CONTINUUM" and provided background information about the first collaboration between Art Lounge Manila and Galerie Raphael Davao, its artists, and a few of the paintings that have contributed to the exhibit over the years.

Some of these paintings are from Carlo Magno, he is famous of his works as the Abstract Minimalist "BENEATH THE PALE MOONLIGHT" painting.

Also include in the exhibition are Louie Ignacio's colorful expressions, Tet Aligaen's strong watercolor botanicals, Migs Villanueva's whimsical figurative work, and Roel Obemio's distinctive vignettes and figures. Anna De Leon, Anthony Palo, Francis Nacion, Herbert Pajarito, Jef Cablog, Jinggoy Salcedo, Jonathan Dangue, Kristine Lim, Melissa Yeung Yap, Pepe Mendoza, and Rodel Buban are also featured in the exhibition.

Visiting the exhibition allowed me to view the paintings differently. Instead of flipping through them like a magazine, I truly paid attention to the details, the artist's painting style, and their possible meaning. Each of Anthony Palo, Migs Villanueva, Francis Nacion, and Roel Obemio's paintings, for instance, evokes an emotional response when viewed.

Each painting focuses primarily on human expression and the lives of its subjects. The color background and the in-depth thought contribute to the paintings' mood, and the topic is effectively conveyed. Additionally, the paintings of Anthony Palo and Migs Villanueva convey a feeling of individuality, and you can experience their emotions via their work. I believe this is the reason why these images stood out to me so much: simply glancing at it fascinates and draws you in.

Another painting that had this effect on me was LIPAD NG BUHAY by Kristine Lim, which was a close-up of the face of an eagle with a Mindanaoan touch. In this paintings, you can see every expression on the eagle's face because you can see the sculpted lines that build an expression. Since it was a close-up, which are often in black and white, I found it intriguing that this image was created using Mixed Media on Canvas. It felt as though you were staring at a genuine eagle and not just a painting of one. The purpose of the exhibition was to demonstrate, via paintings and handicrafts, how to combine the arts and crafts to create something magnificent. I enjoyed the exhibit overall; it was intriguing and did a good job of demonstrating the incorporation of arts, crafts, and painting; however, I wished it were larger and had more to display. The Galerie Raphael Davao is a little space, thus they should create a new display that would also feature the collaborative efforts of Davao, Manila, and Visayas artists.

I also learnt things that I had never known before, such as the fact that the Filipino television director, film director, and music video director Direct Louie Ignacio was also a painter. This was something that I had never known before.

I enjoyed how the paintings were presented throughout the space; all of the walls were covered with paintings, with large Carlo Magno paintings adorning the longest front walls. On the other walls were paintings by different artists, while at the room's corners and in the middle of the floors were Brass, Acrylic on Canvas by Jonathan Dangue and Jinggoy Salcedo's stainless steel and glass sculptures.

The room's layout enhanced the exhibit by allowing visitors to have a closer look at the paintings hanging on the walls. Each painting was a varied size, which contributed to the variety of shapes and styles. The room's walls were painted white, which accentuated the artworks' hues. The colors are so vibrant that they jump out at you as soon as you see them, making it impossible to ignore the paintings. This show and the artists' use of color was fantastic; they didn't utilize dull and uninteresting hues, but rather hues that provoked thought and kept the viewer engaged.

I believe that the positioning of the artworks in the exhibition was intended to attract visitors. Next to the large sign that provided an overview of the exhibit was a smaller sign that provided a brief description of the display. This large sign outside the Galerie Raphael Davao announcing "CONTINUUM" would draw a large number of visitors to the exhibition. And this signage did not disappoint; the background is white, and the gold-colored lettering of the word CONTINUUM has a spotlight on it, making it the focal point of the event because it is the first thing you notice when you look at it. I appreciate the area since it is located in Azuela Cove; I like how they arranged the exhibit space because it provides the public a dramatic feeling.

Other works by Ricky Francisco, Jef Cablog, Janus Delacruz, Melissa Yeung Yap, Herbert Pajarito, Rodel Buban, and Anna De Leon caught my eye and struck me as interesting. I adore the overall concept of each of their paintings, which are filled with people and animals that resemble an abstract tribe, especially Tet Aligaen's "HAPYAK SERIES" paintings of a flower and leaves.

It appears to be an amusing image, as if there was a party going on. The radiance of the flowers and leaves is the first thing that draws my attention because the light in the room reflects directly off of them. It's particularly intriguing because Ms. Aligaen painted it with coolness and gentleness, producing a fantastic outcome. The other artwork is by Anna De Leon, and I enjoy her use of color in her paintings.

It has a minimalistic appearance, which is highly popular with the current generation. This specific collection of paintings piqued my interest because I immediately recognized its purpose upon viewing them.

I would recommend this exhibit to anyone who like arts and crafts, since it provides a unique viewpoint on how iconic paintings can be simply by how they are displayed. Visiting this exhibit and viewing the paintings, sculptures, etc., made me realize how much the arts have evolved since the days when you could only draw. And that would be the only copy, otherwise they wouldn't be able to capture the movement in the paintings, or even get the exact hue or figure. The exhibition space has also shown me how things have changed, how artists have evolved in their area, and how this has impacted the concepts and thoughts they would have to showcase their work at home. This exhibition helped to my understanding of the history of the arts and crafts by demonstrating how past artwork has progressed and influenced what we can achieve today. It demonstrated how paintings and sculptures can be used to convey tales, how a position or facial expression may lend meaning to a piece, and how you can interpret things as you view them.

I encourage you to take part in this celebration of art and creativity, visit Galerie Raphael present the show Continuum, which features the resulting collection. The artists' reception was held yesterday, September 3, and it was attended by art enthusiasts and local Davao Artists.  The exhibition will continue until September 14, 2022 at Galerie Raphael - Davao, located at Unit 2, Retail Block 2, R. Castillo, Lanang, Davao City.
