Every year in the month of August, the city of Davao hosts a festival known as Kadayawan. This event is a celebration of appreciation for the many blessings bestowed upon the city, including the wealth of culture, bounty of harvest, and tranquility of daily life. In addition to this, it honors and commemorates the 11 Tribes, who are a confederation of native people that currently reside in the city.

The origin of the word Kadayawan is Madayaw, which signifies precious, good, and outstanding.

The Kadayawan Festival of Davao began in 1986 as a collection of tribal festivals showcasing the thanksgiving traditions of Mindanao's indigenous tribes. Historically, Davao's ethnic communities residing at the base of Mount Apo would gather for a bountiful harvest.

Indak-Indak sa Kadalanan, Pamulak, or the floral float festival, and Hiyas sa Kadayawan are the three primary attractions of the celebration. In addition to this, the Kadayawan Tribal Village in Magsaysay Park and the Kadayawan 3D Mapping Light Show is a major tourist attraction.

The Kadayawan Tribal Village welcomed visitors for the first time on August 5 of this year. I was not present for the opening, but I did go to the location the next day, and I was astounded by the modifications that had been done to the village. In comparison to the past, they now enjoy a significantly larger and superior space.

I was able to catch a glimpse of the Hiyas sa Kadayawan Talent Presentation event on that same day. But I have to get going early since I don't want to miss the 3D Mapping that will be taking place at the Davao City Hall.

The 3D Mapping Light Show is one of the attractions in Kadayawan that you absolutely cannot miss. Not only does it provide interesting information about the history of Kadayawan, but it also highlights the development that our city has undergone over the course of the past years.

The "Kadayawan Festival" is a celebration of Davao's commitment to preserving its legacy. Festivities showcasing Davao's rich local culture, accompanied by an upbeat atmosphere, make the festival a must-visit for both locals and tourists.

Next week, we will be holding our Misa Pasasalamat and Pag-abli sa Kadayawan or the Official Opening of Kadayawan Festival 2022 with the theme: "KASIKAS SA KADAYAWAN," which will be held at Bantawan Amphitheatre in Magsaysay Park.

Apo Agua Infrastuctura, Inc. (Apo Agua) has delivered 2,220 meters of water pipelines to Barangay Tawantawan in Baguio District, therefore reaffirming its commitment to its host communities over the long term. The barangay will use the donated pipelines to enhance its existing water infrastructure, thereby enhancing the delivery of water.

Present during the turnover of the water pipelines were (R-L) Congressman Isidro Ungab, Davao City Water District General Manager Mildred Aviles, Apo Agua Operations Head Shake A. Tuason, Apo Agua Project Manager Dorcas Ho, Tawantawan Barangay Kagawad Jimmy Enoch, and Davao City 3rd District Councilor Alberto “Abet” Ungab.

These additional pipelines will complete Tawantawan's second water pipeline system, which will connect the barangay's newly constructed water reservoir to its current water supply. In consequence, this will increase the barangay's water supply, alleviating the pressing demand for a sufficient water supply and enhancing the lives of approximately 600 residents.

This is one of our most pressing issues in the barangay, thus this donation is of great assistance to the community. 600 additional homes have been supplied with water since we began using the pipes. Ricardo Gierran, captain of Barangay Tawantawan, stated, "I expect to have additional projects with Apo Agua that would benefit the residents of Tawantawan."

"As we work towards completing the Davao City Bulk Water Supply Project (DCBSWP) and supplying water to the entirety of Davao City, we also continue to search for ways to offer more to our host communities. While Tawantawan is one of the host towns that will not directly benefit from the DCBWSP, we expect that bringing smaller but sustainable water solutions in their area will assist in addressing their basic water needs, as stated by Apo Agua's president, Anna Lu.

Apo Agua has also offered assistance to Davao City Water District by assisting with the expansion of its water truck effort to District II, while the DCBWSP is in the final stages of project construction. In addition, Apo Agua is now restoring roads in fourteen (14) barangays in the Second and Third Districts of Davao City as a result of its pipelaying activities.

Apo Agua has announced that it will oversee the development of the Davao City Bulk Water Supply Project in order to expedite its completion and offer 300 million liters of safe water per day to more than one million Davaoeños.

As the primary catch-up plan, Apo Agua would aggressively pursue as many construction work streams in parallel as possible, with Apo Agua in the lead. Apo Agua aims to begin operations by the end of 2022 despite a very tight timeline, assuming a rapid and seamless transfer.

YHEST Realty Development Corp., a joint venture between Cebu Landmasters Inc. (CLI) and the Yuson, Huang, and Tan families of the famous Villa-Abrille clan of Davao, opened the 23-hectare Davao Global Township (DGT), envisioned as Mindanao's most sustainable central business area.

On July 23, the celebration was attended by Davao City mayor Sebastian "Baste" Duterte, represented by city councilors Sweet Advicula and Bonz Militar, and vice-mayor Melchor Quitain, Jr.

The utility and road networks of the former Davao Golf Club in Davao's densely populated Matina area are nearly finished.

SELLING OF PREMIER COMMERCIAL LOTS KICK STARTED

Additionally, the sale of prime commercial properties to business groups wanting to leverage prospects presented by the region's expanding economy commenced. YHEST initially offered for sale 27 township commercial lots with a total area of 47,194 square meters. Lots range in size from 1,054 to 3,446 square feet.

Phase 1 of Davao Global Township (DGT) is expected to be completed in 2026. It includes the township’s first residential development The East Village at DGT, a commercial area and lifestyle mall DGT City Center, and DGT Cultural Center.

INVESTING IN DAVAO

The National Competitiveness Council and the Department of Trade and Industry have produced the 2021 Towns and Municipalities Competitive Index, which ranks highly urbanized cities based on economic vitality, government effectiveness, infrastructure, and resiliency. Davao achieved the best ranking of any city outside the national capital region and has been among the Top Five since 2015.

The Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry has acknowledged Davao as the most peaceful and secure city in Southeast Asia. In a valedictory and state-of-the-city address, then-mayor Inday Sara Duterte reported that the city's crime index reduced from 13 in 2016 to 1.9 in 2021.

DGT PHASE 1

Phase 1 of Davao Global Township consists of the township's first residential development, The East Village at DGT, a commercial district and lifestyle mall, DGT City Center (scheduled to open in early 2024), and DGT Cultural Center (opening 2024).

In the first quarter of 2022, three of the six towers of The East Village at DGT with 1,087 units sold out in less than a week. This led to the opening of the fourth tower in June of last year. All four towers with 1,334 units are 90 percent sold with a total sales value of P5.25 billion after three months on the market.

After only two years of site development the Davao Global Township was officially inaugurated on July 23. The utilities and road networks of the former Davao Golf Club in Davao’s populous Matina district are now almost 100% completed. DGT City Center, a P700 million lifestyle mall with retail, dining, and entertainment options, is also progressing smoothly in order to meet the needs of locals and increase foot traffic.

The P200 million DGT Cultural Center will complement both projects with exhibition space, museum space, a theater, and a function area for up to 250 people.

BEST TOWNSHIP IN ASIA

The perfectly masterplanned DGT was just recognized by the prestigious PropertyGuru Asia Property Awards 2021 as the greatest township in Asia. Other landowners in Visayas and Mindanao who wish to stimulate economic activity in their regions through collaborations with CLI have also shown interest.

DGT is a sustainable township characterized by the presence of native trees, a one-hectare central park for Davao City residents, and other pocket parks. The municipality is equipped with earth-friendly features, flood mitigation technologies, and sustainable solid waste management. Among its many intelligent community elements are open spaces, broad bike lanes and sidewalks, and an underground cabling distribution system.

CLI’S LARGE-SCALE DEVELOPMENTS

Meanwhile, efficient progress is being made on other CLI communities designed to provide future-ready employment and lifestyle opportunities. The 100-hectare Minglanilla Techno Business Park in Minglanilla, Cebu, has commenced reclamation. Beginning in 2025, it is expected to become another economic powerhouse in the Central Visayas.

CLI will also soon showcase the 14-hectare mixed-use Manresa Town in Cagayan de Oro, which will give commercial and residential options within open spaces to students of the neighboring future Xavier University Masterson Campus, nicknamed "Campus of the Future." Also in negotiation are real estate developments in Cebu and Bacolod.

Puerto Princesa, Palawan (Aug. 5, 2022) --Francis B. Lara Ho, a Filipino-American producer based in the United States, and Michael Copon, a Filipino-American actor and director, are collaborating on the film "1521," which will depict a clandestine love story set against the epic clash between pre-colonial Filipinos and Spanish forces of Ferdinand Magellan in Mactan, Philippines over 500 years ago.

The film boasts a powerhouse cast including Copon, renowned American actor Danny Trejo, Filipino superstar Bea Alonzo, and award-winning actress Maricel Laxa-Pangilinan.
Didi or Diwata, the protagonist of "1521," fantasizes about being transported to pre-colonial Philippines while touring the remnants of an ancient Spanish fort. In her dream, she is a local princess who falls in love with Enrique, Magellan's attractive translator, and their passion becomes entangled in the struggle.
As soon as Didi awakens, the border between her dream and reality begins to blur, and the situation becomes increasingly complex.

The majority of the film will also be told through Lapu-perspective, Lapu's who is considered the first Filipino hero for leading the forces that beat the Spaniards.

Copon, who will both direct and portray Lapu-Lapu in the film, stated that he undertook the project to promote Filipino history and culture.

"Nobody is aware of what happened to Magellan. Some Americans believe he recently died. And oftentimes, the history of the Philippines is swept under the rug, unnoticed, which led to the passion that we wanted to embrace those stories and embrace the culture, and say, 'Hey! Let me get this out there,'" said Copon, who is known for his roles in "Power Rangers Time Force" and "One Tree Hill."

"Even more historically significant is the fact that this is the first time a Hollywood director and producer are creating a film about a Filipino subject with Hollywood stars and Filipino stars in the same film," he added.

Magellan will be played by Trejo, who featured in the "Machete" and "From Dusk till Dawn" film series.

Alonzo will play Diwata, while Hector David Jr., who previously participated in "Power Rangers," will represent her romantic interest Enrique.

Copon stated that "1521" would not solely center on the Battle of Mactan, describing the relationship between Diwata and Enrique as the "heart" of the plot.

"We didn't want to merely make a movie about the battle and the conflict," he explained.

Lara Ho stated that the entire film would be shot in Palawan, which was chosen for its picturesque beaches and mountains.

The producer, himself a Palaweño, anticipated that the initiative will bring additional chances to the people of the province.

"I was pleasantly delighted to discover, during the audition process, that so many Palaweños possess extraordinary skill. They simply require opportunities, which we are providing here "Lara Ho remarked.

"Sadly, despite being one of the richest provinces in terms of natural resources, Palawan has one of the worst poverty rates in comparison to other provinces. I thus hope that bringing projects here would change this "he stated.

I am a Dabawenya. I was born and raised in the city of Davao. And I love my dialect, Bisayan (Visayan).

There are eleven tribes here in Davao City, which implies that we utilize our own dialect to describe to which tribe we belong. Although I was born and raised in Davao City, both of my parents are Bisaya. My father is from Matalom, Leyte, and my mother was born in Davao City; however, her parents are from the Tagalog region, which explains why she speaks Tagalog(Filipino) and Bisaya. This also explains why my language usage differs from that of other Bisayan speakers in my city.

In my city, we have four spoken languages: CEBUANO, ENGLISH, FILIPINO and NATIVE DAVAOENO.

Some visitors or tourists will ask how come the Bisaya or Binisaya dialect of Davao City is different from Cebu. Well, traditionally Davaoeño (Dabawenyo) is a language of the Davao Region of Mindanao in the Philippines. According to Zorc (1977), it is a native Mansakan language influenced by Cebuano and Tagalog. It was the principal language of the Davaoeno people, but it is no longer spoken in my city as we have shifted to a local dialect of Cebuano language called Davaoeno Cebuano often just called Davaoeno.

"Lahi ra dyud kaayo ang Bisaya sa Davao City kay naa pud sya'y gamay nga mix na Filipino ug English or ginatawag nga Taglish. Same sa ako, dili ko kaistorya ug straight bisaya. Sa karong panahon, matawag na kini nga Davao Conyo among pag'istorya."

Ang ebolusyon sa diyalekto sa akong lungsod talagsaon kaayo. Kay ang Davao City mao ang melting pot sa lain-laing kultura. Ang diversity sa pinulongan sa atong siyudad kay dako kini nga pinulongan nga gipaningkamotan sa matag etnikong grupo sa atong mga igsoon nga huptan ug ugmaron aron mapasa ang kabilin sa bahandi sa atong mga nag-una. (The evolution of dialect in my city is truly amazing. Because Davao City is the melting pot of various cultures. Our city's language diversity is vast. These are the languages that each ethnic group of our brothers strives to maintain and cultivate in order to transmit the legacy of our predecessors' richness.)

We should not simply focus on teaching children this subject, as it appears to be quite challenging to instruct young children in the in-depth usage of the mother tongue, particularly in Math and Science. I am not opposed to studying more languages as a supplement, because this mother tongue can be used in everyday situations. I believe that the mother tongue should not be incorporated in the curriculum, especially in primary school, because Filipino youngsters are not yet developed enough.)

A 10 episode cultural documentary series presenting the major languages of the Philippines which are: Tagalog, Kapampangan, Pangasinan, Ilokano, Bicolano, Hiligaynon/Kinaray-a, Cebuano, Waray, Meranaw. Senator Loren Legarda, one of the most prominent proponents for Philippine culture, will host the program. Mr. Floy Quintos authored the texts, while Mr. Jeypi Salonga directed them. As part of the NCCA's celebration of Buwan ng Wika, the premiere is slated for August 6, 2022, 4:30 to 5:00 p.m. on ABS-CBN News Channel (ANC).

Usapang Wika was created to provide communication and enjoyment throughout the pandemic. Zoom and Tiktok inspired interview approaches and scene presentations. An internet crowdfunding initiative helped us travel to these languages' centers, allowing us to present the event in a young, imaginative, and fresh way.

With the help of our respective specialists and real-life anecdotes from native speakers, we hope to offer viewers a sense of the breadth and depth of each language. It is our goal that Usapang Wika would serve as a symbol of our country's resilience and success in the face of our multilingualism.

Episode 1

How do we understand each other? An inviting intro of Usapang Wika Episode 1 asking its viewers, how do we become a unified country despite our different languages.

When I'm still studying, I definitely ask this way. I'm always curious about the origins of my native tongue. As a result of my bilingualism, I'm able to communicate in both Tagalog and Bisaya. I'm still in the Philippines, thus I have no idea why I can't grasp the language of other cities. I must admit that I frequently need to interrupt my speech because I am uncertain of the exact term I wish to convey. This is particularly true while speaking with a guest from Pampanga or Pangasinan who is in Davao.

How come we cannot understand each other?
