Lamoiyan Corporation’s Licealiz Head Lice Treatment Shampoo initiated Kilusang Kontra Kuto (KKK) in 2016, a coalition that has been battling head lice infestation nationwide for a kuto-free Philippines. The campaign includes yearly nationwide shampoo activity in schools in its commitment to fight head lice infestation or pediculosis and eliminate the social stigma associated with it.

In light of the 5th year of this initiative, Lamoiyan Corporation’s Licealiz aimed to support DepEd’s Basic Education Learning Continuity Plan in the time of COVID-19 (BE-LCP). This is the department’s response to the challenges posed by COVID-19 which covers the most essential learning competencies, multiple learning delivery modalities for teachers, required health standards in schools, and more.

“We are grateful for DepEd for being very supportive of our KKK campaign. With our long-running partnership with them, we were able to visit several schools in Visayas and Mindanao, do shampooing activities among students, and share the correct way of combatting head lice since 2016,” said Lamoiyan Corporation Vice President for Marketing Bing Cavestany.

“Although students now are practicing distance learning and we temporarily cannot do our annual activities due to the COVID-19 crisis, Licealiz would like to consistently promote health and personal hygiene through our humble donation as children or even family members are still susceptible to head lice infestation no matter the circumstances, especially with many staying at home and in close quarters during the pandemic,” she added.

Aside from encouraging good oral hygiene, Lamoiyan is also advocating the correct way of treating head lice infestation, which is considered the second most common health problem of public school children after tooth decay.

Selected regions include Central Visayas, Northern Mindanao, and Davao. Lamoiyan also recently donated hygiene products to Central Luzon, CALABARZON, and National Capital Region.

The total value of donated hygiene products nationwide amounts to over three million pesos.

1. Wash hair with Licealiz Shampoo

2. Let it stay for 10 minutes

3. After 10 minutes, get "suyod" or the lice comb and comb your hair vigorously.

4. Wash & Rinse it properly.

The symposium was made possible by the Lamoiyan team headed by the Assistant Brand Manager, Ms. Cristina Martinez in partnership with the Department of Education.

Lamoiyan was able to raise awareness and debunked misconceptions surrounding pediculosis by spreading the correct information together with the Drugstores Association of the Philippines (DSAP) and Mommy Bloggers Philippines to further help disseminate the correct information about pediculosis and widely reach the grass roots.

1. Avoid physical contact - though lice don't have a wing to fly, physical contact especially with hair must be avoided. So tell you kids not to play ..oh-oh kids are kids..what to do? We can ask our children not to share personal items like combs and hair accessories. And also hats, caps, that will make lice and nits present.

2. Pillows, Clothes, Blankets should be washed in hot water and then let it dry from a high heat, this will kill lice and nits.

3. Clean the house thoroughly, the floor and furniture can also be infected.

4. Most of all, don't forget to use Licealiz to treat your children's hair & scalp.

According to a study conducted by the Department of Education and the University of the Philippines, head lice infestation is still considered as the second most common health problem in the Philippines public schools next to tooth decay. While it may not be a fatal condition, attention must still be given to this persistent condition which commonly found in school. But lice can also move from adult to adult. You might have hugged a colleague who has caught them from his/her children. They can ping from the static of a comb or maybe you tried on a hat and a louse moved into its new home.

Before the late 90's, life was simpler but no good solution to the louse problem. I remember when I was young and all of my cousins are infected with lice (well except me because my mother always take good care of my hair - Special thanks to my Mama for that!), my aunt slather mayonnaise on to the infested head of my two cousins; olive oil, coconut oil, vinegar. Sometimes gas that beep upon execution, or use suyod to suck out the worst. They also tried to apply heated straighteners, like hair ironing, then stow bedding in the freezer to kill any off-head survivors. Some use dimethicone treatments (which is not safe especially to children). Others try everything and curse at end.

Head lice have been around as long as humans, they have been picked, preserved, and pried from the teeth of a comb. But how can we prevent and stop them from coming back?
