1. Nintendo 64
The N64 revolutionized the gaming industry worldwide and kept people glued to their television screens. With the signature games of Super Mario and Pilotwings, the N64 was a must have for the 90’s generation children, and continues to be a must-have with posturing man-children to this day. The Nintendo 64 will never go down in history as the most technically advanced gaming system ever, nor will it win any awards for its aesthetics or design. But today, it has won the greatest competition of all. This one.
2. Nickelodeon Cartoons
With titles as popular as Hey Arnold!, Doug, and CatDog, Nickelodeon built an empire of cartoon greatness in the 90s that has yet to be challenged by any other era of television. Looking back, it’s quite clear that these cartoons had a huge impact on our personalities during our formative years. Rugrats got us to run away from our parents. The Ren & Stimpy Show attracted us to psychedelic drugs. Rocket Power even convinced us that roller hockey was cool or interesting.
3. Space Jam
This film dominated box offices throughout the country, being the #1 film in the US while in theatres. Space Jam portrays the reluctant return of Michael Jordan to basketball and the path to success that Jordan and the Looney Tunes follow to overtake the Nerdlucks. You know, just like all classic movies.
4. Power Rangers
We’re not talking about Power Rangers Mystic Force or Jungle Fury or Super TimeCop Action Fun in Space with a T-Rex. No, we’re talking about the original, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, with Tommy and Kimberly and Zordon and Rita Repulsa. Every kid wanted to be a Power Ranger, but most had to settle for wearing a pair of Velcro Power Ranger sneakers to school and, at recess, shouting “Putty Patrol!” while punching their friends in the chest instead, a fair compromise.
5. Forrest Gump
The film that spawned over a decade of mocking of the mentally disabled, Forrest Gump is a true classic of the 1990’s. This movie was unique in its ability to invoke both laughter and tears in audiences worldwide; although for some of us, it only invoked laughter. We should also be thankful for Forrest Gump for giving us the line, “Run, Forrest, run!” which will hopefully be yelled at people awkward running/jogging for years to come.
